7 Ways to Party with the Planet in Mind | (rave edition) #ResponsibleRavingChallenge

If you are anything like me (and I assume you probably are if you are reading this!) then I'm guessing we share an obsession for all things sparkly. And let's face it. We all love glitter No? Okay. Well, maybe we don’t ALL love glitter. But me. I wear glitter pretty much every day. And I amp it up BIG TIME when there is an event (or really ANY excuse. Like a Thursday 💁) to wear even more glitter. And face gems. And fake eyelashes. And, well, you get the point. Just ask… well… anyone who knows me. Or just look at these pics of me below 👀

But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve really begun to realize just how bad plastic is. What I didn’t realize is just how much I use it. Don't get me wrong, I’ve always been one to recycle ♽ (thanks mom and dad!) and cut up plastic 6-pack rings so no little fishies 🐟🐠 get stuck should they end up in the ocean (which sadly, they do.) But y’all. The facts are overwhelming.

Did you know over 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year? And yes. Glitter is made of plastic.

So how can we do our part to make this earth a little cleaner? Is it even possible to party with the planet in mind?

Well, I'm glad you asked. Because yes, it really is. Here are a few ways I've changed my daily routine in an effort to do my part. Hopefully with a little awareness we can all continue to party (and yes, even wear glitter!) without disrupting this planet we call home.

1. SWITCH TO SUSTAINABLE GLITTER

Adopt eco-responsible alternatives to single-use plastic products like traditional PET-based glitter. GLITTEREVOLUTION offers marine and wastewater biodegradable glitter blends that are not only hand-mixed in the USA, but are also plant-based and packed in plastic-free packaging. Plus they are certified home compostable, vegan-friendly and cruelty free. Launautics also offers what they call “Eco Chic” Eco Glitter. On top of that, they even have a Wildlife Warrior glitter line and 100% of the proceeds of the sale goes to the Australian Zoo Wildlife Warriors Worldwide efforts of rehabilitating the Australian wildlife affected by the bushfires, drought and human impact.

2. TRY MAGNETIC LASHES

Don’t sleep on magnetic eyelashes y’all. They may cost a pretty penny, but say goodbye to bulk-purchasing falsies this festival season because you can reuse these over and over. BONUS: they are E A S Y to apply. I don’t know about you, but I cannot for the life of me put on fake eyelashes myself. I beg a friend or pay a MUA to apply them for me. So now not only will you save money on lashes, but also on application and glue (the eyeliner is magnetic!) Plus buying less packages = less plastic packaging waste. Win. Win. I tried them out for the first time at Lights All Night Dallas this past December and will never go back. I snagged mine from Ulta when I was visiting my bestie over Christmas in Lake Jackson, but I’m sure you can find them anywhere (amazon pretty much has everything these days, am I right?!)

3. ADOPT CRUELTY-FREE PRODUCTS

Discover cruelty-free (even vegan) health and beauty products and replace those brands that test on animals. This one was a hard one for me. For years I’ve used NARS bronzer. To this day I can’t find a product that comes anywhere close. I love it. But I stopped using the brand because I didn’t want to feel like I was supporting animal cruelty. So in an effort discover cruelty-free brands that don't test on animals, I started yet another subscription box which you will read about below.

4. HELP SAVE MOTHER EARTH, ONE LESS MAKEUP WIPE AT A TIME

Did you know that 7.6 billion pounds of wipes are thrown into our landfills each year? That’s 20 million pounds of makeup wipes a day. So say goodbye makeup removers (wipes and plastic bottles) forever! Well, for up to 3-5 years at least (or up to 1,000 washes according to The Original MakeUp Eraser.) My work wife Kate opened my eyes to this awesome product this past fall when sent me my first FabFitFun subscription box and this pink little reusable cloth was inside. Now I’m addicted because it removes my makeup (even stubborn waterproof mascara) with just water. Talk about a camping festival must have (am I right?) By purchasing this product, we are joining their movement and helping eliminate the THIRD most wasteful products in the world WIPES. BONUS: It’s free of chemicals (plus vegan friendly and cruelty-free!) You can snag yours at a beauty store, online or like me with FFF. You can get $10 off your first box or email me at hello@ravewithshai.com so I can send you a FREE starter box. Follow and tag @makeuperaser on Insta and use #nomorewipes.

5. THINK REUSABLE, NOT DISPOSABLE

In addition to reusable makeup removers, we can also make the switch to metal straws (BONUS: they keep your drinks cold!), reusable water bottles and of course utilizing the FREE water refill stations at festivals (airports and schools and other public areas now have water refill stations too and you can read how many plastic bottles you've saved!) Which means you’re going to need a hydration pack. And, while we’re at it, we should all also invest in good reusable ear plugs as well. I need to snag a pair or two for myself after hurting my lil eardrums at Liquid Stranger Thursday night so I can stop having to borrow them from new frands.

7. CONNECT AND CARPOOL

Okay. Seriously? How did I not know about the radiate app? My Memphis Rave fam introduced me to it on Thursday night at Liquid Stranger and I cannot believe I am just now learning about it. It’s like online dating for finding raver friends! BONUS: you can now connect to share camping sites, hotel rooms and carpool to festivals and parties together. If you're late to the game like me, (litterally downloaded this a few days ago and I am addicted!) you can read about and download the Radiate app here and start making new rave friends today.

I’d like to challenge those of you reading this to use the hashtags below to help spread awareness to your friends, family, followers and fellow ravers and see if together we truly can make a difference. Also in doing this research, I came upon another nifty lil hashtag to pair with our challenge. #RethinkPlastic #ResponsibleRavingChallenge

Thank you so much for those of you who stuck around to read this to the bitter end. I hope you find it helpful and inspirational and I truly hope you take the challenge. Much love! Until next time, rave fam, peace and love, Shai!
